ÁLvaro Carreras Calls Xabi Alonso “Intense” but Knows Real Madrid Is on the Right Path
Álvaro Carreras is living a dream that many footballers only imagine: wearing the colors of Real Madrid. The young left-back, recently signed by the Spanish giants after his stint with Benfica, shared his first impressions of his new environment, highlighting the demanding nature of head coach Xabi Alonso and the team's ambition to win titles this season.
In his initial statements as a Madrid player, Carreras described the former midfielder turned coach as someone who pays attention to every detail. “Xabi is a very intense coach, but that’s what I like most about him. He has a very clear vision of the game and isn’t afraid to speak his mind,” said the 22-year-old, who has signed a contract until June 2031.
Real Madrid focused on being ready from day one
During preseason, the defender explained that Xabi Alonso demands full commitment from his players both in attack and defense: “He asks me to push forward when possible but also to get back and support defensively. It’s all about balance.” For Carreras, that level of intensity is proof that the club is heading in the right direction: “We’re getting ready for what’s ahead. We worked individually over the summer, but now it’s about building chemistry as a team.”
Even after just a few days of training at Valdebebas, Carreras has been impressed by the atmosphere in the locker room. “The quality of the players is outstanding, but what struck me most was the humility and unity here. Everyone is working toward the same goal.”
With the LaLiga opener against Osasuna set for Tuesday, August 19, the defender knows there’s no time to waste. Every session matters as the team gears up for the start of the campaign.
“Training with this badge already feels special, but I can’t wait for the moment I step onto the pitch at the temple,” he said with excitement, referring to the revamped Santiago Bernabéu.

Álvaro Carreras' dream is clear: to earn a spot in Xabi Alonso’s starting eleven and help bring success to Real Madrid in what promises to be a thrilling season.
