Revealed: Luis Díaz and Rashford’s Reaction to Barcelona’s Pursuit of Nico Williams
FC Barcelona has shifted its plans for the 2025-26 season by making Nico Williams, from Athletic Club, their main target to strengthen the left wing. The 22-year-old Spanish winger was chosen for his youth, experience in LaLiga, and a release clause of $62 million—a lot cheaper than other options like Luis Díaz and Marcus Rashford. This decision has sparked unexpected reactions from both players, who until recently were linked to the Catalan club.
Luis Díaz’s disappointment over a slipping chance
For Colombian Luis Díaz, the deal has gotten complicated by several factors: he’s under contract with Liverpool until 2027, his market value is between $75 and $85 million, and he hasn’t publicly shown any intention to leave. This has frustrated Barça’s board, who expected more active involvement from Díaz’s camp. While Díaz still dreams of wearing the Blaugrana jersey, he knows that Nico’s preference has seriously cooled down his chances.
Rashford doesn’t give up and is open to sharing the spotlight with Nico
Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford, striker for Manchester United, is still eager to join the team coached by Hansi Flick. Valued at around $48 million, the English forward is even willing to take a pay cut to make the transfer happen. Unlike Díaz, Rashford believes he can coexist with Nico Williams in attack, thanks to his versatility and ability to play in various offensive roles, including as a backup to Robert Lewandowski.

Full backing from the locker room and board on A signing that looks imminent
The push for Nico Williams has the full support of Hansi Flick and president Joan Laporta, who shifted his stance after learning about the player’s desire to join Camp Nou. His close connection to Lamine Yamal, his projected impact both on and off the pitch, and his readiness to make the jump make Nico a strategic bet for Barça’s new era.
While both Rashford and Díaz keep hope alive, all signs point to Nico Williams being the second signing of the Flick era, following goalkeeper Joan García. Talks with his representatives are well underway, and unless something unexpected happens, the Athletic Club winger will be donning Blaugrana colors next season.
