The African national teams that stunned the world by eliminating World Cup champions
Africa's triumphs over world football powers
Throughout history, very few African teams have achieved such remarkable feats. Each of those victories became an unforgettable moment for African football and for the history of the tournament.
Cameroon, Senegal, and Morocco will forever be remembered by fans thanks to performances that defied expectations and marked a turning point for African football.
Cameroon shocked the world against Argentina at Italy 1990
The first major upset came at Italy 1990, when Cameroon defeated reigning world champions Argentina 1-0, just four years after La Albiceleste had lifted the trophy at Mexico 1986.
Led by a historic generation of players, the African side defeated Diego Maradona's team in the tournament's opening match thanks to François Omam-Biyik's memorable goal. That victory launched an unforgettable campaign that saw the Indomitable Lions reach the quarterfinals.
Senegal stunned France to open Korea/Japan 2002
Twelve years later came another of the greatest upsets in World Cup history. Senegal defeated 1998 world champions France 1-0 in the opening match of the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan.
Papa Bouba Diop's goal changed Senegalese football forever. France ultimately crashed out in the group stage without scoring a single goal, while Senegal reached the quarterfinals in its first-ever World Cup appearance.
Morocco knocked out Spain at Qatar 2022
After a scoreless draw and a memorable penalty shootout, Morocco eliminated Spain in the Round of 16 at Qatar 2022.
Although Spain were not the reigning world champions, they were former World Cup winners after lifting the trophy at South Africa 2010. Morocco's victory therefore became another historic elimination of a nation that knows what it takes to win the FIFA World Cup.
That triumph propelled Morocco to the semifinals, the best-ever finish by an African nation in World Cup history.
The victories by Cameroon, Senegal, and Morocco proved that African national teams can challenge any football powerhouse. Their historic performances not only stunned the world but also showcased the continued growth and competitiveness of African football on the biggest stage.
