Possible Boycott by Germany for the Next World Cup
Due to Europe’s geopolitical context, there is speculation in Germany about a possible boycott of the World Cup to be held in North America.
¿A World Cup without Germany?
The 2026 World Cup in Canada, the United States, and Mexico is just around the corner; with summer approaching, the German national team could boycott it by not participating.
Amid the geopolitical conflicts over the Danish territory of Greenland, the German team threatens to exert symbolic pressure on the United States by not participating in the World Cup.
Germany, the four-time champion
The German national team is a four-time world champion, having won in 1954, 1974, 1990, and 2014, but was also eliminated in the group stage at the 2018 World Cup in Russia and at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The four-time world champion is a fundamental part of this World Cup’s operation, as is any of the world champions. The absence of any world champion team would pose a major problem for the tournament.
Although this idea originated in Germany, it is only considered a last resort, a possible negotiation method proposed by a member of the Christian Democratic Union and closely linked to Friedrich Merz, the German Chancellor.

Speculations, for now
A boycott proposal is nothing new for FIFA or the World Cup competition, but for now, all these statements are conjecture and depend on a fluid and ever-changing geopolitical situation.
If the German national team were to participate in the match, they would be eager to add a fifth World Cup title to their trophy cabinet. First, it must break the terrible streak that has plagued the team since that victory against Argentina in the final in Rio de Janeiro. The Germans haven’t been able to advance past the group stage since then.
Will Germany go to the World Cup? And if they go, how far will they get? Will he lift the World Cup trophy?
