When discussing the France national football team, two names inevitably stand out: Kylian Mbappé and N'Golo Kanté. In recent days, however, both players have found themselves at the center of speculation over an alleged rift.

THE CONTROVERSY

Although neither player has publicly addressed the rumors, social media has been flooded with claims questioning the strength of their friendship. Their bond was forged while representing one of the world's most talented national teams, a partnership that helped France lift the trophy at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Despite sharing some of the greatest moments of their careers—including World Cup glory—and enduring difficult setbacks such as France’s elimination at UEFA Euro 2024, the two stars currently find themselves in very different stages of their careers.

Mbappé remains one of the elite figures in world football and is enjoying a strong individual campaign with Real Madrid CF, despite the club's lack of silverware. Meanwhile, Kanté has revitalized his career in Saudi Arabia, returning to top form and helping Al Nassr FC win the league title alongside Cristiano Ronaldo.

Today, both players are among the leaders of a French squad considered one of the favorites to lift the World Cup trophy on July 19 at MetLife Stadium.

According to some reports circulating online, tensions may date back to 2018, when Kanté was awarded France’s prestigious Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur following the World Cup triumph. Social media users have pointed to footage that allegedly shows Mbappé reacting awkwardly during the ceremony, fueling years of speculation.

The rumors intensified after a March 29 friendly between France and Colombia, where some observers claimed Mbappé asked for the captain’s armband while Kanté had yet to enter the field. According to the speculation, the midfielder did not appreciate the gesture.

Adding to the narrative, videos shared online have been interpreted by some fans as showing Kanté declining to greet the Real Madrid forward, while others have suggested he has appeared somewhat isolated from the rest of the squad.

Regardless of whether there is any truth behind the rumors, France’s focus must remain on the bigger picture. After finishing runners-up at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and suffering disappointment against Spain national football team at Euro 2024, Les Bleus are determined to return to the summit of international football.
