Harry Kane explains why England stopped attacking against Argentina: “It's normal to protect a one-goal lead”
Harry Kane addressed one of the biggest talking points following England's heartbreaking semifinal defeat to Argentina at the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Harry Kane addressed one of the biggest talking points following England's heartbreaking semifinal defeat to Argentina at the FIFA World Cup 2026.
After losing 2-1 despite leading with just over 10 minutes remaining, the England captain admitted his team stopped pressing and surrendered possession, saying that protecting a narrow lead is often a natural reaction.
"It's normal to try to hold onto a one-goal lead"
Kane acknowledged that England lost control after taking the lead.
"We scored and deserved to be ahead. Then, for one reason or another, we struggled to keep the ball, struggled to press, and simply allowed them to build momentum and create more danger in our defensive third."
The striker said many teams instinctively become more cautious in those situations.
"It's a normal mentality to try to hold on and protect a one-goal lead."
However, he declined to debate whether the tactical approach was ultimately the right one.
"This isn't the time to talk about that."

"We're devastated"
Kane admitted the manner of the defeat was especially painful.
"When you're that close, just over ten minutes away, and it slips away from you like that... of course it hurts."
The England captain said the entire squad was left heartbroken.
"We're devastated."
He also expressed sympathy for England supporters.
"We know how much reaching the final meant to them."
England falls short again
Kane reflected on another painful semifinal exit, saying England continues to come close without reaching the final hurdle.
"Another semifinal. We always talk about knocking on the door. We're close. We just need to find that missing piece in the final stages of tournaments."
The striker, who finished the World Cup with six goals, also declined to discuss his international future.
Kane said he continues to take his career year by year and described representing England as "a pride and a joy."
