FIFA World Cup 2026: Iran - Squad, Stars and Everything You Need to Know
Team Melli arrives at the 2026 World Cup with experienced leaders, regional power status, and the ambition of finally advancing past the group stage for the first time ever.
The Iran national football team, widely known as “Team Melli,” will officially compete at the FIFA World Cup 2026™ after overcoming complex logistical and diplomatic negotiations with FIFA ahead of the tournament. Head coach Amir Ghalenoei announced a preliminary squad of 30 players that will train in Turkey before traveling to the team’s base camp in Tucson, Arizona. From that list, the final 26-man roster will be selected for Group G, where Iran will face New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt.
Iran enters the tournament with a roster built around international experience and tactical discipline. The preliminary squad released ahead of the competition includes several veteran leaders alongside emerging domestic talent.
In goal, the team is led by Alireza Beiranvand, Payam Niazmand, Seyed Hossein Hosseini, and young prospect Mohammad Khalifeh. Beiranvand remains the undisputed leader of the position thanks to his vast international experience and reputation as one of Asia’s most reliable goalkeepers.
Defensively, Iran relies on experienced names such as Shoja Khalilzadeh, Morteza Pouraliganji, Hossein Kanaani, and Milad Mohammadi to provide solidity and leadership at the back. The defensive line will play a crucial role against the powerful attacks expected in Group G.
The midfield is anchored by players including Saeid Ezatolahi, Alireza Jahanbakhsh, Rouzbeh Cheshmi, and Mohammad Karimi. Their primary responsibility will be maintaining tactical balance and supporting quick transitions between defense and attack.
The team’s biggest offensive weapon remains Mehdi Taremi. The veteran striker and national team captain enters the tournament as Iran’s undisputed star player and primary attacking leader. At 33 years old, Taremi brings international experience, composure inside the box, and proven scoring ability at the highest levels of football.
One of the most controversial stories surrounding Iran’s squad is the absence of Sardar Azmoun. The country’s third all-time leading scorer was left out of the official squad due to technical decisions made by Ghalenoei amid ongoing controversies involving political and personal matters discussed heavily in Iranian media over recent months.
Iran will play all three of its group-stage matches in the United States, beginning its campaign on the West Coast.

Preparation for the tournament has not been entirely smooth. Because of geopolitical tensions, Iran struggled to organize multiple high-level international friendlies before the World Cup. Instead, the national team relied heavily on internal training sessions and arranged a preparatory match against Gambia on May 29 in Antalya before crossing the Atlantic for the competition.
Goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand is expected to be one of the key leaders of the squad, bringing more than 80 international appearances and significant tournament experience. His leadership and shot-stopping ability will be critical if Iran hopes to compete against stronger opponents.
