Egypt Extends Hossam Hassan as Head Coach Following 2026 World Cup Elimination
The Egyptian Football Association wasted no time making its decision. Just hours after Egypt's loss to Argentina, it confirmed Hossam Hassan will remain in charge following the country's most successful FIFA World Cup campaign ever.
Egypt Backs Hossam Hassan After the Greatest World Cup Run in the Nation's History
Egypt's 2026 FIFA World Cup journey may have ended in the Round of 16, but it did not change the plans of the Egyptian Football Association. Only hours after a dramatic 3-2 defeat to Argentina, the federation officially confirmed that Hossam Hassan will remain as head coach, reinforcing its belief in the project that has reshaped the national team's future.
According to the Egyptian Football Association's official statement, the board approved contract extensions for both Hossam Hassan and his brother, Ibrahim Hassan, who serves as the national team's director. While the remaining administrative steps will be completed during the board's next meeting, the work accomplished under the Hassan brothers deserves to continue.
A Project That Changed Egyptian Football
The Pharaohs secured their first-ever World Cup victory, defeating New Zealand 3-1 during the group stage to keep their tournament hopes alive.
They then eliminated Australia in a penalty shootout in the Round of 32, reaching the knockout stage milestone that had eluded Egyptian football throughout its history.
Those achievements explain why the federation chose stability instead of starting over. Since taking charge in February 2024, the 59-year-old Hossam Hassan has overseen 35 matches and delivered results that many believed were out of reach for the national team.
In addition to qualifying Egypt for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, he also guided the team to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations semifinals, proving the progress extends well beyond a single tournament.
Argentina's Comeback Doesn't Erase Egypt's Historic Performance
The ending against Argentina was heartbreaking, especially considering how close Egypt came to producing one of the tournament's biggest upsets.
The Pharaohs held a 2-0 lead until the 75th minute, putting themselves within touching distance of a historic quarterfinal berth. Argentina, however, responded with three late goals to complete a 3-2 comeback, in a match that also sparked controversy over several refereeing decisions.
Even with the painful defeat, Egypt earned widespread praise for the level it displayed throughout the competition. The team showed composure, tactical discipline, and the ability to compete against one of the world's elite sides, leaving fans optimistic about what lies ahead.

The Road Now Points Toward 2030
Although the Egyptian Football Association has not officially disclosed the length of the new agreement, local media reports indicate the contract could run through 2030, giving the coaching staff the opportunity to continue building a long-term project.
The Egyptian delegation is scheduled to return home on Friday, when the federation's board is expected to finalize the remaining contractual details.
The extension also serves as recognition for a coach who previously revealed he had continued working with the national team for several months without a formal contract in place.
