Colombia struggles to eliminate Ghana and will face Switzerland in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16
"Los Cafeteros" live up to expectations after overcoming this tough test at Kansas City Stadium.
Colombia had to work for it on Friday, but a first-half goal from Jhon Arias secured a 1-0 victory over Ghana in Kansas City, eliminating the African side from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The win sends Los Cafeteros into the Round of 16, where they will face Switzerland at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver, Canada.
Colombia also became the final team to qualify for the knockout stage and the first nation to play matches in all three host countries—Mexico, the United States, and Canada—during the tournament.
An early goal and another disciplined defensive display were enough for Nestor Lorenzo's side to continue one of the tournament's most consistent campaigns.
ARIAS MAKES THE DIFFERENCE
Colombia found the breakthrough in the 14th minute thanks to Arias.
The move began after Luis Javier Suarez replaced the injured Jhon Cordoba just minutes into the match. Suarez delivered a cross from the right, and Arias arrived at the back post to slot home what proved to be the winning goal.
Although Ghana threatened first through Thomas Partey, Colombia quickly took control of possession and dictated the tempo.
Lorenzo's team created several chances to extend its lead but was repeatedly denied by goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi, who produced outstanding saves to stop Johan Mojica, Luis Diaz, and Davinson Ssnchez.
One of the biggest talking points was Néstor Lorenzo's decision to substitute James Rodríguez at halftime. The veteran captain and Colombia's talisman struggled to make an impact during the opening 45 minutes.
DEFENSIVE SOLIDITY SETS UP SWITZERLAND CLASH
Despite the narrow scoreline, Colombia once again showcased its balance at both ends of the field.
Center backs Davinson Sánchez and Jhon Lucumí kept Carlos Queiroz's attack largely under control, while the midfield dominated possession and limited Ghana's opportunities.
Luis Díaz thought he had doubled the lead after halftime, but his goal was ruled out for offside. The Liverpool winger later forced another fine save from Ati Zigi in a one-on-one situation, while Juan Fernando Quintero nearly added a second with a long-range effort.
Colombia reached the Round of 16 having conceded just one goal in four matches, reinforcing its reputation as one of the tournament's most well-rounded teams.
On Tuesday, July 7, Colombia will face Switzerland looking to reach the World Cup quarterfinals for just the second time, matching its historic run at Brazil 2014—its previous World Cup appearance and still the nation's best-ever finish. It also marks the fourth time Los Cafeteros have reached the Round of 16.
