Roberto Martínez faces a major decision ahead of football’s biggest stage, in what could be his final tournament in charge of the Selecao.
With Portugal’s FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign just around the corner, all signs point to Cristiano Ronaldo reclaiming a spot in the starting lineup.
ROBERTO MARTÍNEZ’S TRUST
At 41 years old, the all-time leading scorer in international football remains a key figure for Roberto Martinez, who has repeatedly emphasized that the striker earns his call-ups based on performance rather than reputation. While competition for places in attack is stronger than in previous cycles, the captain heads into the tournament as both the sporting and emotional leader of a side with genuine title ambitions.
Since taking charge of Portugal in 2023, the Spanish manager has consistently backed Ronaldo in public, highlighting his influence within the squad and his ability to continue making a difference even in the closing stages of his career.
Reports have also suggested that this tournament could be Martinez’s final one in charge of the Portuguese national team, giving the coach added motivation to lean on the experience of his captain as he looks to bring his tenure to a successful conclusion.
Although Ronaldo faced criticism for some of his performances in pre-tournament friendlies, Portugal has maintained its faith in its leader, and everything points to him being in the starting XI for the World Cup opener. He was also named in the starting lineup throughout the team’s preparation matches.
RONALDO’S IMPRESSIVE WORLD CUP RECORD AS A STARTER
Ronaldo’s place in Portugal’s starting lineup has been a constant throughout his World Cup career. He started every Portugal match at the 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2018 editions of the tournament.
The notable exception came at Qatar 2022. After starting during the group stage, he lost his place in the lineup for the knockout-round matches against Switzerland and Morocco, a decision made by then-head coach Fernando Santos.
EXPERIENCE REMAINS HIS BIGGEST ASSET IN A STAR-STUDDED SQUAD
This summer’s tournament marks Ronaldo’s sixth World Cup appearance and, in all likelihood, the final one of his career.
While Portugal boasts one of the most talented generations in its history, the forward’s experience, leadership and influence remain invaluable assets.
That is why, barring a last-minute surprise, all indications are that the legendary striker will once again lead Portugal onto the pitch from the opening whistle against the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
