Xabi Alonso Leads First Real Madrid Training and Sets Sights on Club World Cup
Xabi Alonso officially began his tenure as Real Madrid head coach with his first training session, as preparations ramp up for the Club World Cup debut against Al Hilal on June 18.
First Day at Valdebebas for Xabi Alonso
A new chapter began at Real Madrid on Monday as Xabi Alonso led his first official training session at Valdebebas, stepping in for Carlo Ancelotti, the most decorated coach in the club’s history. Alonso arrived early in the morning to meet with all departments involved with the first team, signaling his commitment and enthusiasm from the outset.
His coaching staff includes both new and familiar faces. Luis Llopis stays on as goalkeeping coach, having overseen the strong performances of Thibaut Courtois and Andriy Lunin in recent years. Joining Alonso are Sebastián Parrilla as assistant coach, Alberto Encinas and Ismael Cameforte-López in physical preparation roles, and Beñat Labaien, who will continue as a tactical analyst.
Club World Cup Preparation Underway
The training session was held with a limited squad — only 11 first-team players participated, including Lucas Vázquez, Fran García, Dani Ceballos, Rodrygo, and Álvaro Asencio. They were joined by 10 academy players such as Sergio Mestre, Fran González, Jacobo, Chema, and Mario Martín, who returned from a loan at Valladolid.
Notably, Youssef ‘Yusi’, Jacobo, and Chema had already worked with Alonso in 2018 during his stint with the youth ranks. All three are expected to be considered for the squad heading to the Club World Cup, where Real Madrid will face Al Hilal in their first match on June 18 at 3:00 PM (ET) in Miami.
The club has already made two signings — Dean Huijsen and Trent Alexander-Arnold — reinforcing the importance placed on this tournament. With FIFA estimating potential earnings of up to $125 million for the winners, Real Madrid aims to make a strong impression in the first edition of this revamped competition.
There’s a sense of renewed energy around Valdebebas, and Xabi Alonso is already making his mark. The Club World Cup will be his first major test at the helm of Los Blancos.
