Will Mbappé Play Against Salzburg in the Club World Cup?
Real Madrid look to secure a spot in the Round of 16 in Philadelphia, with surprises in the starting lineup and the continued absence of Kylian Mbappé, who has yet to debut in the tournament.
Rüdiger Returns After Surgery and Fills Suspension Gap
Antonio Rüdiger is the main change in Xabi Alonso’s lineup for Real Madrid’s third match in the Club World Cup, facing Salzburg at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. The German center-back replaces suspended teammate Raúl Asencio, who was sent off in the previous match against Pachuca.
This marks Rüdiger’s first start since the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona at the end of April. Following that match, he underwent surgery to repair a meniscus injury in his left knee.
Coach Xabi Alonso once again relies on academy product Gonzalo García, who will start his third consecutive match up front. Meanwhile, Rodrygo Goes remains on the bench and is set to miss his second straight game after not playing a single minute against Pachuca, despite starting in the opener versus Al Hilal.
Mbappé Still Missing From the Squad
The big question remains the status of Kylian Mbappé, who has not been included in any of the squad lists for the group stage. Although Real Madrid has yet to provide an official update, it is believed the French star is either being preserved for the knockout rounds or still dealing with physical discomfort.
Real Madrid's starting XI to face Salzburg includes: Thibaut Courtois, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Antonio Rüdiger, Dean Huijsen, Fran García, Aurélien Tchouaméni, Fede Valverde, Arda Güler, Jude Bellingham, Vinícius Júnior, and Gonzalo García.
With one win and one draw in their first two matches, Los Blancos lead Group H and control their destiny heading into the final group fixture. A win or draw ensures advancement; a loss could complicate matters, depending on the outcome of the Pachuca vs. Al Hilal match.
Despite strong performances thus far, Mbappé’s continued absence and Rodrygo’s reduced role remain hot topics among the fanbase. Will this be the last time we don’t see the French superstar on the pitch before the elimination rounds?
