Messi Faces a New Challenge: Reaching 50 Goals with Inter Miami at the Club World Cup
Lionel Messi is on the verge of another personal milestone in his legendary career. This Saturday, as Inter Miami makes its debut against Al Ahly of Egypt in the opening match of the Club World Cup, the Argentine star could score his 50th goal for the pink team, further solidifying his legacy—this time on American soil.
The match will take place at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, where Messi will aim not only for his 50th goal with Inter but also for the 880th of his professional career. So far, he has found the net 49 times in 59 official matches, maintaining an impressive scoring rate. In his first campaign, he scored 11 goals in 14 games; in the second, 23 goals in 25 appearances with 13 assists; and in the current season, he already has 15 goals in 20 matches.
Messi’s Big Personal Goal at the Club World Cup
Messi's motivation goes beyond team success. While Inter Miami faces a tough group stage with rivals like Palmeiras, Porto, and Al Ahly, the Argentine legend is also focused on reaching a symbolic milestone: scoring his 50th goal with his current club.
“It’s a beautiful tournament, a different kind of opportunity. I’m excited to play it and compete against the best,” Messi said in statements shared by FIFA. This revamped Club World Cup, featuring 32 clubs from around the globe, is the perfect stage for Messi to shine once again—and for U.S. fans to enjoy one of football’s greatest icons up close.
The former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain forward is already Inter Miami’s all-time top scorer, having helped the club win the Leagues Cup and the 2024 MLS Supporters' Shield as the best team of the regular season. In addition, he recently lifted the 2024 Copa América with Argentina, bringing his total number of official titles to 45.
At 37, Messi continues to show that age is no barrier to greatness. With millions watching around the world, he’ll step onto the pitch this Saturday aiming to reach another historic milestone—while also leading Inter Miami into a potentially unforgettable Club World Cup campaign.
