Marcelo Backs Real Madrid in The Club World Cup: “They will Always be Favorites”
Former Brazilian defender Marcelo Vieira, one of Real Madrid’s greatest legends, has no doubts about the team’s chances in the upcoming Club World Cup, set to be played in the United States from June 15 to July 13. According to the former left-back, the Spanish giants remain top contenders regardless of who they face.
Speaking during the traditional Corazón Classic Match—a charity game held at the Santiago Bernabéu between Real Madrid Legends and Borussia Dortmund Legends (ending in a 3–3 draw)—Marcelo took time to share his thoughts on the international club tournament and other current football topics.
“Madrid will always be favorites”
With confidence, the Brazilian spoke about the expectations surrounding Carlo Ancelotti’s side. “Real Madrid always has the edge in competitions like this. The club has history, experience, and a winning mentality. No matter where it’s played, they’ll always be favorites,” he stated.

He also had kind words for Ancelotti, who is now in charge of the Brazilian national team after closing a successful chapter at Real Madrid. “I wish Carletto all the best. He’s an amazing coach and a great person. Brazil is in good hands,” Marcelo said. The two worked together for three seasons at the club.
Views on the future and his family
When asked about the current state of his old position, Marcelo commented: “There are a lot of full-backs with different styles. Nuno Mendes and Hakimi (both from PSG) can play there. At Madrid, we also have strong options like Fran García and Ferland Mendy. I think we’re well covered.”
Marcelo also spoke about his son Enzo, who is beginning to shine in Real Madrid’s youth academy. “He works hard and keeps a level head. Social media doesn’t get to him—he knows how tough it is to make it as a footballer,” he shared with pride.
Although he dreams of seeing his son become a professional player, Marcelo emphasized that his happiness is what matters most. “If in the end, football isn’t for him, that’s okay. My wife and I are grounded people, and he’ll keep studying and preparing for whatever comes,” he added.
With his unwavering love for Real Madrid and clear vision for the game, Marcelo remains an eternal ambassador of the club, both on and off the pitch.
