Two years after leaving FC Barcelona, the Spanish left-back never imagined he would be helping inaugurate a new global tournament alongside stars like Lionel Messi, his longtime teammate and now the driving force behind the American side.

Jordi Alba, still chasing glory despite his age

For Jordi Alba, playing in this historic edition of the tournament is a unique opportunity. In an interview with FIFA, the veteran player said he felt lucky to be competing against some of the world’s top teams, even though Inter Miami didn’t initially meet the qualification standards. The presence of international icons—especially Messi—convinced FIFA to extend a special invitation to the David Beckham-led franchise.

"I'm used to facing big opponents and I know how tough these matches are. Despite our lack of international experience, we want to make a strong impression and enjoy this experience—for ourselves and for our fans," Alba said.

The Spaniard acknowledged that every match will be challenging, especially against a powerhouse like Al Ahly, the triple CAF Champions League winner. He stressed the importance of adapting to different playing styles, noting that it makes the competition even more exciting—and harder to win.

Even at 36, Alba remains determined: “I’m just as eager to play and win as ever. I want to prove that I can still compete at the highest level.”

Messi, red-hot heading into the big stage

On the other side, Lionel Messi, who will turn 38 later this month, heads into the tournament in top form. The Argentine star has lit up Inter Miami’s last three games with five goals and three assists, earning him the MLS Player of the Month award.

This season, Messi has already racked up 10 goals and 6 assists in 13 MLS matches. His dominance follows a spectacular 2024 campaign where he scored 21 goals and delivered 18 assists, earning him the MLS MVP award.

Under Javier Mascherano, Inter Miami has bounced back from a rough stretch, recently thrashing Montreal (4–2) and Columbus Crew (5–1). The squad also includes legends like Luis Suárez and Sergio Busquets, bringing quality and experience to the team.

High-stakes debut in Miami

The opening match against Al Ahly will be played at Hard Rock Stadium and officiated by Alireza Faghani of Australia. It kicks off a challenging group stage featuring Porto and Palmeiras.

Regardless of the outcome, MLS sporting director Alfonso Mondelo sees this as a major milestone for American soccer: “It’s an honor to be invited. Competing internationally will only help us grow.”
