Alarms in the United States: Sergiño Dest Could Miss the World Cup
An Injury Could Sideline the Full-Back from the World Cup
With less than 100 days until the World Cup, U.S. defender Sergiño Dest suffered a hamstring injury during the match in which PSV defeated AZ Alkmaar 2-1 at home.
Dest had to leave the match in the 57th minute, assisted by the medical staff and showing clear signs of pain. His coach, Peter Bosz, mentioned after the game that the injury could be serious, putting his participation in the upcoming World Cup at risk.
Concern for the United States National Team
Although there is still no definitive diagnosis regarding the severity of the injury, the full-back will miss the two matches that United States will play in March against Belgium and Portugal. This complicates the planning of Mauricio Pochettino, who was counting on him to continue building his squad ahead of the tournament.
The possible absence of Dest would be a major blow for the American team. The full-back is one of the players with the greatest ability to create imbalance from the defensive line, thanks to his speed, ball control, and constant offensive runs.
A Tactical Problem for Pochettino
In addition, his defensive performances in the Netherlands had been quite solid, so his absence would weaken an area where the Argentine coach does not have many alternatives with similar characteristics.
This could force Pochettino to modify his tactical system if he cannot rely on Dest during the tournament. The matches in March were key to fine-tuning details and consolidating the team’s core before the World Cup debut, where United States will face Paraguay in their opening match of the tournament.
For now, both PSV and the United States national team are closely monitoring the player’s recovery to determine the exact timeline and properly plan his potential return, hoping he will arrive at the World Cup in full physical condition.
Meanwhile, Sergiño Dest himself remained optimistic on social media, posting a message assuring that he will do everything possible to recover and return to his best level as soon as possible.
Now all that’s left is to wait. Will he be ready in time for the World Cup?
