Cienciano has been sanctioned by CONMEBOL following a series of breaches detected during its match against Botafogo in the Round of 16 of the 2026 CONMEBOL Sudamericana. The Peruvian club received a financial penalty as well as a formal warning ahead of its upcoming international fixtures, with a quarterfinal series against Montevideo City Torque now approaching.
CONMEBOL sanctions Cienciano after historic Botafogo tie
Cienciano received a US$5,000 fine and a formal warning for breaches recorded during its match against Botafogo in Cusco, with the Peruvian club now preparing to host Montevideo City Torque in the 2026 CONMEBOL Sudamericana quarterfinals.
A $5,000 fine
The CONMEBOL Disciplinary Unit imposed a US$5,000 fine on Cienciano for breaching Article 4.6.2 of the 2026 CONMEBOL Sudamericana Club Manual. The decision concerns the conditions provided for accredited media during the match against Botafogo.
The competition rules establish specific requirements for press areas, including standards related to location, visibility of the field, lighting and connectivity. According to the disciplinary ruling, the Cusco-based club failed to meet the requirements established for that area during the August 13 match.
CONMEBOL also determined that the amount will be automatically deducted from money Cienciano is due to receive from the governing body through television rights or sponsorship. The club therefore will not be required to make a separate payment to settle the penalty.
The fine is directly connected to one of the most remarkable nights of Cienciano's continental campaign. The Peruvian side defeated Botafogo 6-1 in the first leg, building a decisive advantage in the tie before traveling to Brazil for the return match.
A formal warning over security measures
The ruling included a second decision. Cienciano received a formal warning for breaching Article 41, section a) (ii), of the CONMEBOL Safety and Security Regulations.
That provision concerns external security rings around stadiums and the requirement to establish controlled perimeters around venues. Their purpose is to create a secure zone and restrict access to people without a valid match ticket or official accreditation, while also helping organizers control other factors that could affect the organization and safety of the event.
No additional financial penalty was imposed for this breach. However, CONMEBOL expressly warned Cienciano that a repeat offense of the same or a similar nature could fall under Article 27 of the CONMEBOL Disciplinary Code and result in further disciplinary consequences.
Cienciano turns its attention to the quarterfinals
The disciplinary measures do not change Cienciano's sporting position in the CONMEBOL Sudamericana. After its 6-1 home victory, Horacio Melgarejo's team lost the second leg 1-0 in Rio de Janeiro and eliminated Botafogo 6-2 on aggregate.
Cienciano will now face Montevideo City Torque. The first leg is scheduled for Thursday, September 10 at 7:30 p.m. local time at Estadio Inca Garcilaso de la Vega. The return match will take place on Thursday, September 17 at 9:30 p.m. local time at Estadio Centenario in Montevideo.
The Peruvian club, winner of the 2003 CONMEBOL Sudamericana, will attempt to extend a campaign in which it has already eliminated defending champion Lanús and Botafogo to reach the final eight.
