CONMEBOL Hands Down Heavy Sanctions After Independiente vs Universidad de Chile Incidents
CONMEBOL has issued its disciplinary ruling following the violent incidents that took place during the Copa Sudamericana 2025 clash between Independiente and Universidad de Chile on August 20 in Avellaneda. The governing body decided to apply severe punishments to both clubs, including disqualification, matches behind closed doors, and financial penalties.
What sanctions did Independiente receive?
Club Atlético Independiente was hit with the harshest measures. First and foremost, the Argentine side was immediately disqualified from the 2025 Copa Sudamericana, meaning their elimination from the current edition, although they will not be barred from future international competitions.
Additionally, Independiente must play their next seven home matches behind closed doors in CONMEBOL competitions. The team is also prohibited from having their fans present in their next seven away matches, a significant blow to the “Rojo” supporters.
What sanctions did Universidad de Chile receive?
Universidad de Chile was not spared either. The Chilean club will also serve the same sporting sanction: seven home games behind closed doors and another seven away games without their fans in international competitions.
On top of that, they were fined $150,000, plus an additional $120,000 for violations of CONMEBOL’s disciplinary code. Both sums will be deducted directly from the club’s earnings through broadcasting and sponsorship rights in continental tournaments.
A precedent set for the 2025 Copa Sudamericana
The ruling, signed by tribunal president Eduardo Gross Brown, vice president Amarilis Belisario, and member Lucas Ribeiro, sends a clear message about CONMEBOL’s zero-tolerance policy regarding incidents that threaten safety and the integrity of the competition.
With these sanctions, the 2025 Copa Sudamericana loses one of its historical contenders in Independiente, while Universidad de Chile faces the rest of the tournament under extremely adverse conditions—without the backing of their passionate supporters.
