Independiente Santa Fe eliminated River Plate at the Monumental on Wednesday to reach the Copa Sudamericana quarterfinals after a dramatic 22-kick penalty shootout ended 8-7 in favor of the Colombian side.

The match finished 1-1 after 90 minutes, with Sebastián Driussi scoring for River Plate before Franco Fagúndez equalized for Santa Fe. Following a scoreless first leg in Bogotá, the tie had to be decided from the penalty spot.

That is where an unlikely hero emerged: Weibmar Asprilla. Santa Fe's goalkeeper scored the decisive penalty to send his team through and also saved one of River's 11 attempts.

River dominates before Driussi breaks through

River Plate was clearly the stronger side in the first half and created three chances inside the opening 15 minutes.

Driussi sent two efforts narrowly wide, while Ángel Correa came close to opening the scoring when his shot struck the outside of the net.

Santa Fe responded through Hugo Rodallega, but River continued to create the better opportunities. Thiago Almada also tried his luck before halftime, sending his effort over the crossbar.

On one of the final chances of the opening half, Iván Scarpeta made a crucial intervention inside the box to deny Correa from close range.

River's pressure finally paid off in the 52nd minute. Gonzalo Montiel found Sebastián Driussi at the far post, where the forward turned the ball into the net to make it 1-0.

Fagúndez sends the tie to penalties

Just when River appeared to have control of the tie, a Lucas Martínez Quarta handball inside the box changed the match.

Franco Fagúndez stepped up and converted the resulting penalty in the 80th minute to make it 1-1.

The score remained level through the final whistle, sending the Copa Sudamericana round-of-16 tie to penalties.

22 penalties before Asprilla becomes Santa Fe's hero

The shootout turned into a 22-kick marathon.

River goalkeeper Santiago Beltrán saved three Santa Fe penalties and appeared destined to become the hero of the night.

Instead, his own attempt changed everything.

After making three saves, Beltrán stepped up to take a penalty and fired his effort over the crossbar.

That gave Weibmar Asprilla the opportunity to finish it. The Santa Fe goalkeeper took responsibility and converted the decisive kick to seal an 8-7 shootout victory and spark Colombian celebrations at the Monumental.

Santa Fe will face Vasco da Gama

The victory sends Independiente Santa Fe into the Copa Sudamericana quarterfinals.

The Colombian side will next face Vasco da Gama, which advanced after defeating Olimpia 4-1 on aggregate.
