Tanzania Secure Quarterfinal Spot With Late Goal Against Mauritania
A dramatic late strike by Shomari Kapombe gave Tanzania their second win in the CAF African Nations Championship, edging past Mauritania and taking the top spot in Group B.
Kapombe Strikes in the Dying Minutes
Tanzania took a huge step toward the knockout phase of the 2024 CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) with a narrow 1-0 victory over Mauritania. The match, played under the lights of the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium in Dar es Salaam, remained scoreless until the 89th minute.
It was then that veteran defender Shomari Kapombe capitalized on a clever pass from Iddy Nado, calmly finishing past Abderrahmane Sarr to ignite wild celebrations in the stands. With this win, the Taifa Stars reach six points from two matches, sitting at the top of Group B and virtually securing their place in the quarterfinals.
For Mauritania, still winless after two matches, the result is a major blow as they now face an uphill task to stay in the tournament.
Missed Chances and Late Drama
The first half was a tactical battle, with both teams showing defensive discipline but lacking a finishing touch. Mohamed Zweide, El Mami Tetah, and Ahmed El Moctar tested Tanzania’s backline, while Feisal Salum and Iddy Nado came close for the hosts.
After halftime, Tanzania looked more dangerous. Substitutes Ahmed Pipino and Nassor Saadun added speed, and pressure mounted. In the 80th minute, Cheikh Hattab forced a save from Yakoub Suleiman, while Clement Mzize narrowly missed the target at the other end.
Just when the game seemed headed for a draw, Kapombe stepped up as captain and delivered a decisive blow. His late strike, following a perfectly timed run, left Mauritania with little time to respond.
Group B Outlook
With this result, Tanzania lead Group B with six points and no goals conceded. Burkina Faso sit second with three, while Madagascar and Mauritania are tied with one. Central African Republic, still with a match in hand, remain at the bottom.

Tanzania will likely rotate players for their final group game against Madagascar, while Mauritania must beat Burkina Faso and hope other results work in their favor to keep their CHAN hopes alive.
