'I don't see Dortmund challenging Bayern next year', admits Kovac
Borussia Dortmund finished 16 points behind Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, and Niko Kovac does not expect much to change in 2026-27.
Niko Kovac admits he does not expect his Borussia Dortmund side to challenge Bayern Munich for the Bundesliga title next season.
Bayern won their 35th Bundesliga title this term, finishing 16 points ahead of second-placed Dortmund.
Vincent Kompany's side set a new record for most goals in a single German top-flight campaign (122), with Harry Kane, Michael Olsie and Luis Diaz leading the way.
In Kane (41), Olise (34) and Diaz (29), three players from the same club reached 29 goal involvements in a single season for the first time since Opta records began in 2004-05.
Dortmund, however, conceded the fewest number of goals in the Bundesliga this season (34).
It is the fourth time they have finished a league campaign with the best defensive record, having previously done so in 2010-11 (22), 1994-95 (33) – both of which ended in them winning the title – and 1965-66 (36).
Nevertheless, they were far off the pace set by Bayern, who won their first 16 games in all competitions to start the season, a new record for a club from Europe’s top five leagues.
Kovac insisted Dortmund cannot match Bayern's star power, with Kane and Olise both tipped as contenders for the Ballon d'Or.
"I know everyone expects more, higher, further, faster. I don’t see us challenging Bayern next year," Kovac told WAZ.
"I’m not a naive person, but a realist, and I’m trying to put everything into perspective.
"Bayern have far more money, far more superstars than we do."
Bayern can still make it a domestic double, too, as they face Stuttgart in the DFB-Pokal final on Saturday.
