Eriksen Brings His Time With Wolfsburg to an End

Christian Eriksen's story with Wolfsburg has come to an end much earlier than expected.

The German club officially announced that both sides reached an agreement to terminate the midfielder's contract, which was originally set to run through June 30, 2027.

The decision comes just over three months after the episode that once again raised concerns surrounding the player's health.

Eriksen has not played since June 7, when he collapsed during the friendly between Denmark and Ukraine in Odense. Since then, he has followed an individual rehabilitation program in his home country while Wolfsburg remained in contact with him and the doctors responsible for his treatment.

Now, at 34 years old, the Dane has decided to close this chapter.

"At this moment, it is important for me to be close to my family in Denmark," Eriksen explained in his farewell.

The midfielder thanked the club, his teammates and the fans, while sporting director Dieter Hecking explained that Wolfsburg wanted to leave the decision about his future in the player's hands.

The Second Episode Came Five Years Later

Eriksen's career was forever changed on June 12, 2021.

During the match between Denmark and Finland in the group stage of Euro 2020, which was played a year later because of the pandemic, the midfielder suffered a cardiac arrest and collapsed on the field at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen.

The quick reaction of his teammates and the medical staff ultimately saved his life.

Simon Kjær was among the first to assist him before the medical team arrived. Eriksen received CPR and was defibrillated on the field before being transported to the hospital.

He was later fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator, known as an ICD, designed to detect dangerous heart rhythms and deliver a shock when necessary.

It appeared that episode had been left behind.

Eriksen returned to professional soccer with Brentford in February 2022, later spent three seasons with Manchester United and continued his career in Germany with Wolfsburg.

Until it happened again this past June.

The ICD Protected Eriksen Against Ukraine

During the friendly against Ukraine, Eriksen grabbed his chest and fell to the ground in the second half.

The images immediately brought back memories of what had happened five years earlier, but this time the situation was different.

The midfielder quickly regained consciousness and was able to walk off the field before being taken to the hospital. The match was eventually abandoned.

One day later, Eriksen explained that he had received a shock from his ICD and said the device had done exactly what it had been implanted to do: protect him when he needed it.

He also made a point of distinguishing the episode from what happened in 2021.

The incident, however, had a major impact on both him and his family.

After undergoing further tests, Eriksen remained away from competition, and in July Wolfsburg announced that he would begin an individual rehabilitation program in Denmark.

He never played for the club again.

Eriksen Has Not Announced His Retirement

His departure from Wolfsburg inevitably raises questions about what comes next in his career, but one thing has not happened yet: Christian Eriksen has not announced his retirement from soccer.

The Dane joined the German side as a free agent a year ago and made 34 appearances across the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and relegation playoff.

He finished his time at the club with three goals and 10 assists.

It was a short spell for a player who has made more than 300 appearances in the Premier League and has also represented clubs including Ajax, Tottenham, Inter Milan, Brentford and Manchester United.

For now, his next step will not be finding a new team.

It will be continuing his rehabilitation and remaining close to his family in Denmark.

After two episodes that have marked his career five years apart, any decision about returning to competition will take a back seat.

Eriksen is saying goodbye to Wolfsburg, but not yet to soccer.
