Vincent Kompany says Bayern Munich "had to get more" out of their 2-2 Bundesliga draw with Mainz as he lamented their wasted chances.

It was just the second time this season that Bayern failed to win in the Bundesliga, and they needed an 87th-minute Harry Kane penalty to salvage a point against their rock-bottom visitors.

Lennart Karl's impressive scoring run continued as he netted the game's first goal, but Kacper Potulski and Lee Jae-sung flipped the game on its head midway through the second half.

Bayern had 24 shots in the game, racking up 4.5 expected goals (xG) with 11 attempts on target and eight 'big' chances.

They also had 84.7% possession throughout the game, but came up against an inspired Daniel Batz, who made eight saves as Mainz almost pulled off the shock of the campaign.

"It's disappointing regardless of the opponent and where," Kompany said. "We always want to win. We didn't manage that.

"Mainz did an excellent job with the few moments they had. And we couldn't make the difference with our big chances like we normally do. You get results like this after a game like that.

"Looking at things objectively, it would've been bad if we'd not created any chances and had gifted them loads. That wasn't the case.

"We still scored two goals, but unfortunately, conceded two. But if we're honest, we had to get more out of this with so many chances."

Mainz only had five shots in the game and beat Manuel Neuer with both of their attempts on target. Meanwhile, Bayern peppered 13 efforts on Batz's goal just before the break.

Bayern passed 50 goals in 14 Bundesliga matches – the quickest a tally has ever been achieved in the competition, but Kane believes they should have been more clinical in their final home game of 2025.

"I think we completely dominated the first 44 minutes of the game," he said.

"We had lots of chances to score and allowed them practically none. And then we conceded right on half-time, which changed the momentum.

"We came out for the second half and didn't dominate as much. We couldn't quite find that final pass or shot. They played well, meaning we had to fight.

"When you play against teams like this, they fight for every point. They can defend well, can defend the ball, can rescue situations, throw themselves into everything – and that's what happened. At the end of the day, we'll take the point and keep going."

Bayern remain top of the Bundesliga, with a nine-point cushion over RB Leipzig, ahead of their final match of the year away to Heidenheim.
