The Trial for the Death of Diego Armando Maradona Begins Its Final Week

  • The trial for Diego Maradona's death is entering its final stretch, with the closing arguments of the defenses taking place this week

Beginning of the closing arguments

The trial that seeks to determine responsibilities for the death of Diego Armando Maradona begins this Tuesday its final week of hearings, during which the lawyers of the seven defendants will present their closing arguments over three days.

The arguments will begin this Tuesday with the presentation by the lawyers of psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov and psychologist Carlos Díaz.

The Prosecutor's Office and the plaintiff's lawyers requested in their arguments sentences ranging from eight to 14 years in prison for the psychiatrist for the crime of eventual homicide, in conjunction with ideological falsehood, for falsifying a medical certificate.

In the case of Díaz, the requests for sentences were more varied: the Prosecutor's Office and two plaintiffs requested five years in prison for the crime of negligent homicide, while a third requested 12 years for the crime of simple homicide with eventual intent, and the remaining two requested his acquittal.

These two requests for acquittal generated, during the past week, the anger of two of Maradona's daughters and even a dispute between them and one of their sisters.

The main accused

After Tuesday's hearing, on Wednesday the court will listen to the arguments of the lawyers for the primary care physician Leopoldo Luque and the home care coordinator from the Swiss Medical company, Nancy Forlini, the two main defendants in the trial, for whom the prosecution and the plaintiffs have requested higher sentences, of up to 16 years in prison.

The final hearing, meanwhile, will be held on Thursday and will be dedicated to the arguments of the lawyers for the head nurse, Mariano Perroni, and the nurse Ricardo Almirón, for whom the prosecution and the plaintiffs have requested sentences ranging from three to five years for the crime of negligent homicide.

On the same day, the lawyer for Pedro Di Spagna, a clinical doctor who visited Maradona only once and for whom the Prosecutor's Office and the five plaintiffs requested acquittal, will also present a brief statement.

Final day

The trial began on April 14 and held 45 hearings dedicated to the production of evidence, during which 75 testimonies were heard and a hundred messages exchanged between the accused were presented.

After Thursday's hearing, the Oral Criminal Court (TOC) No. 7 of San Isidro will begin deliberating its verdict, which is expected to be announced in December. EFE
