Harsh Criticism of Joao Félix After Al-Nassr Move: “Talent Means Nothing Without Effort”
Joao Félix’s surprising move to Al-Nassr continues to spark reactions across the football world. This time, it was his former Atlético Madrid teammate Saúl Ñíguez who delivered a scathing assessment, blaming the Portuguese forward’s lack of effort for his unfulfilled potential.
What did Saúl Ñíguez say about Félix?
Speaking on El Partidazo de Cope, Saúl didn’t hold back:
“He has all the qualities to be an incredible player, but no matter how good you are, if you don’t work, it means nothing.”
He also referenced a quote from former coach Paco Jémez to make his point:
“I once heard Paco Jémez say that talent without work is worthless... Many of us tried to help Joao, but if someone doesn’t want to…”
Saúl’s comments suggest that within the Atlético Madrid locker room, there were efforts to guide Félix, but they ultimately proved futile.
Why has Félix’s decision been so controversial?
At just 25 years old, Joao Félix has left European football after a turbulent spell. Despite joining Atlético Madrid in 2019 for a then-record €126 million from Benfica, he never fully adapted to Diego Simeone’s system. Loan stints at Chelsea, Barcelona, and AC Milan also failed to reignite his form.
Although he was permanently signed by Chelsea, he quickly fell out of favor under new boss Enzo Maresca, and after a short stay in Italy, he chose to join Al-Nassr for a reported €50 million.
Many critics view this move to Saudi Arabia as a step down in competitiveness, especially considering Félix’s inconsistency over the past few seasons.

A fresh start or a wasted opportunity?
Saúl Ñíguez’s criticism echoes a growing sentiment among fans and pundits alike: Joao Félix is one of the most naturally gifted players of his generation—but talent alone has never been enough.
Now, alongside Cristiano Ronaldo in the Saudi Pro League, Félix will try to reshape his career narrative. Whether this is a new beginning or a final detour, only time—and performance—will tell.
