Does Roger Federer compare himself to Messi? The tennis legend opens up
With class and talent, Swiss icon Roger Federer is one of the greatest players in tennis history—and he recently made an honest confession about football and Lionel Messi.
Despite being a global sports legend, Federer has never hidden his love for football or his admiration for Lionel Messi. Even though the two icons have never truly met in person, the former world No.1 shared thoughtful reflections on the World Cup winner’s legacy.
Is there a comparison between Messi and Federer?
In an interview with ESPN, the 20-time Grand Slam champion admitted that he doesn’t really know Messi and has only crossed paths with him once. Still, Federer had nothing but praise for the Argentine superstar and his impact on the game.
“It’s hard to compare us. He’s done incredible things in football, and I’m a big fan of him.
The way he dominated and changed the game is amazing. I’m happy that he’s already won a World Cup, so he won’t have that pressure next time—although there’s always huge pressure when you play a World Cup.”

Federer’s wish for Messi at the 2026 World Cup
Now retired, Federer is looking forward to enjoying the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada. Speaking as a fan, the Swiss legend revealed what he hopes for Messi at the tournament.
“I’ll definitely be following him at the World Cup. Switzerland has also qualified, so I might go.
I hope Messi gets the ending he wants for his career.”
