Casemiro Defends Neymar’s Lifestyle: “He’s the Best, by Far”
Manchester United midfielder Casemiro has come to the defense of his compatriot Neymar Jr., insisting that the Santos forward remains “the best, by far” when he’s physically and mentally fit. As Brazil continues its preparations for the 2026 World Cup, the former Real Madrid player urged that the Seleção project be built around Neymar—just as Argentina did with Lionel Messi in 2022.
“When he’s fit, he’s the best. By far. Everyone has their own lifestyle, and his is different, but that doesn’t make him any less professional. I know how hard he works, how dedicated he is, and how much he loves football,” Casemiro told Globo in an interview.
Neymar: Between Recovery and Uncertainty
Neymar’s absence from Carlo Ancelotti’s recent squads has raised concerns. The forward, who suffered a torn knee ligament against Uruguay in October 2023, has gone nearly a year without representing Brazil. Although he recently returned to action with Santos in a 1-1 draw against Fortaleza, questions remain about his physical condition.
The Italian coach has reiterated that Neymar remains a key figure but must “show consistency and be available” to regain his place in the national team. “We haven’t closed the door, but he needs to play and prove he can compete at the highest level,” emphasized Ancelotti.
Casemiro, however, believes his teammate deserves special treatment: “You have to adapt the team to him, like Argentina did with Messi. If I have to run more so that he can create and score, I’ll do it without hesitation. Neymar is the kind of player who can change a game in a second.”
“I’ve Played with the Best… and Neymar Is One of Them”
The Brazilian midfielder, one of the Canarinha’s leaders, didn’t hesitate to place Neymar above some of the greatest stars he has shared a locker room with. “I’ve played with Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, Karim Benzema, Marcelo, and Bale—all Ballon d’Or winners. But Neymar is at that level, maybe even above in some ways,” he said.
Casemiro also recalled his early encounters with the Santos prodigy: “I’ve known him since he was 12. He was always different, always decisive. He can decide a game with a single play, and that’s something you can’t teach—you’re born with it.”
With the 2026 World Cup fast approaching, the debate around Neymar’s role remains open. While Ancelotti continues to exercise caution, Casemiro is certain: “Brazil needs Neymar. When he’s healthy, no one even comes close.”
