Barcelona and Real Madrid Force Atlético Madrid to Make an Unexpected Move in an Attempt to Compete With Them
The structural shortcomings of Atlético de Madrid's squad, laid bare during the decisive stretch of last season, have prompted the club to take action in the transfer market. The goal is crystal clear: to make the necessary leap in qualitythat will allow them to compete on equal footing with Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Europe's top clubs across the four titles they’re aiming for.
Rebuild and Refresh: The Mandate from the Metropolitano
Inside the offices at the Cívitas Metropolitano, the club's sporting directors are fully aware that investment is essential. The current squad has proven insufficient in critical moments, and plans are underway to part ways with players over 30and bring in younger, more physically dynamic footballers suited to the modern game.
$108 Million Already Spent on Three Key Signings
So far, Atlético has spent $108 million on three strategic signings: Ruggeri, Baena, and Cardoso. That figure could rise to $117 million depending on performance-based add-ons agreed with Atalanta, Villarreal, and Real Betis. These reinforcements address three long-standing issues in the squad: left-back, left wing, and defensive midfield.
Cuti Romero: The Big Gamble If the Price Is Right
The standout name on Atlético’s wishlist is Cristian “Cuti” Romero, the Argentine center-back currently at Tottenham Hotspur. His addition would represent a major upgrade to the heart of the defense, joining Giménez, Le Normand, and Lenglet, who has already been signed after his loan spell.
Romero could become Atlético's marquee signing of the summer, potentially surpassing the $53 million spent on Baena. Tottenham, however, is demanding $82 million, a fee far above what the Spanish club can realistically afford. Negotiations have been ongoing for weeks, and the outcome remains uncertain.
More Signings on the Horizon: A Forward and a Winger
Beyond Romero, Atlético must also invest in a replacement for Ángel Correa should he leave. While the club doesn’t expect to spend as much as it did on previous signings, securing a forward with Correa’s qualities will still require a notable outlay. The club is also considering the addition of a skilled, one on-one winger to strengthen the attack provided there are no unexpected departures.
Bigger Spending, Bigger Ambitions
While some reports claimed Atlético spent nearly $235 million last season, the actual net spending was $106 million a significant sum, yes, but far from the figure used to criticize Diego Simeone and the team’s overall performance. That’s why club officials are now preparing for an even greater investment this summer.
The aim is clear: stay in the race for domestic and international titles. The disappointment of the recent Club World Cup failure still lingers, and Atlético is determined not to repeat that experience. This summer's spending spree represents a bold effort to close the gap with Barcelona and Real Madrid, and re-establish Atlético as a true contender in Europe.
