Mbappé Backs Dembélé for Ballon d'Or, Overlooks Lamine Yamal
Amid growing anticipation for the upcoming Ballon d’Or, Kylian Mbappé, star forward for Real Madrid and Europe’s top scorer, made his stance clear this Saturday during a press conference ahead of the Nations League third-place match against Germany. The Frenchman stated that his vote for the prestigious award would go to his national teammate, Ousmane Dembélé, although he acknowledged that Spain’s young sensation Lamine Yamal is also in the conversation.
“Would I vote for Dembélé? Yes. I don’t think it needs much explaining. People are talking about Lamine Yamal and Dembélé, but my choice is clear: I vote for Dembélé,” the Madrid striker said confidently.
Mbappé and the Ballon d'Or Debate: Dembélé or Lamine Yamal?
The Ballon d’Or race has become increasingly unpredictable. Mbappé pointed out that in recent years there hasn't been a clear favorite, with winners often emerging unexpectedly. “Things can change a lot before September, when the award is handed out,” he added.
Last year, Mbappé finished sixth in the Ballon d’Or voting, having placed third in 2023. While he remains one of the top contenders this season, the current race appears to be led by Dembélé and Lamine Yamal, the Barcelona prodigy who has taken Spanish football by storm.
French national team coach Didier Deschamps also recently voiced his support, stating he stands "100% behind Dembélé" as a candidate. Although Lamine Yamal has delivered standout performances, the fact that Barcelona won’t be part of the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup in the United States could impact his chances.
The Ballon d’Or ceremony will take place on September 22 in Paris, where the successor to Spanish midfielder Rodri — who won the award last year ahead of Vinícius Jr. and Jude Bellingham — will be revealed. The event promises to spark debate and excitement across the football world.
For Mbappé, this season is crucial not only for his personal achievements but also to support his teammates and continue leaving his mark on the global stage.
