Boca Juniors Announce Miguel Ángel Russo as Manager Ahead of Club World Cup 2025
Boca Juniors have officially confirmed the return of Miguel Ángel Russo as the club’s head coach, just weeks before the FIFA Club World Cup 2025, which will take place in the United States this June. Russo replaces Fernando Gago, who parted ways with the club after a series of disappointing results.
“Welcome home, Miguel,” the club posted on social media, alongside images of Russo — including the iconic moment he lifted the 2007 Copa Libertadores, the last time Boca were crowned champions of South America.
Russo begins third spell with a clear mission
At 69 years old, Miguel Ángel Russo takes on the Boca job for the third time, having just ended a stint with San Lorenzo. His first spell (2006–2008) brought the 2007 Libertadores title, while his second run (2020–2021) included the 2019–20 Superliga and 2020 Copa de la Liga Profesional, as well as a deep continental run.
"I'm very happy because I know what Boca means, I know what we’re going to compete for. Being here brings me great joy," Russo said during his unveiling.
"Boca deserves this for everything it represents. Hopefully God gives me the chance to compete at the highest level," he added, referencing the club’s Club World Cup group, which includes Benfica (June 16), Bayern Munich, and Auckland City.
Riquelme, Russo, and a fractured locker room
Russo’s return comes at a turbulent time for Boca Juniors. The team was eliminated early in the Copa Libertadores playoff round and knocked out in the Apertura quarterfinals by Independiente. Frustration among fans has grown, with boos and chants targeting both players and club leadership.
Club president Juan Román Riquelme, a legendary former player and close ally of Russo, offered a warm welcome:
"This is his home. He has given us so much joy."
Now, with a wounded squad and mounting pressure, Boca turns to Russo — a proven leader in the club’s history — to restore pride and take the team back to the top on the global stage.
