(VIDEO) Arturo Vidal pushes Rodrigo De Paul and doesn't hide his anger after Chile's defeat to Argentina
The Argentina National Team once again demonstrated its dominance in the South American Qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup with a 1-0 victory over Chile at the Estadio Nacional in Santiago. The only goal of the match came early, in the 16th minute, through a precise strike by Julián Álvarez, after a great play down the left flank by Thiago Almada.
With this result, Lionel Scaloni’s squad remains atop the standings with 34 points, while La Roja, who reacted too late, stays in 10th place with just ten points—on the verge of missing out on a third straight World Cup.
Chile tried but couldn't break through
The home side started strong, creating an early chance thanks to a powerful shot from Alexis Sánchez, which was brilliantly saved by Emiliano "Dibu" Martínez. However, as the minutes passed, the world champions took control of the match, dictating the tempo and striking at the right moment.
Argentina played with composure and precision, opting for quick attacks after recovering possession. Despite a few mistakes, they managed to keep a disjointed Chilean attack at bay, limiting them to a few isolated chances.
(VIDEO) Tension between Vidal and De Paul after La Roja's defeat
One of the most heated moments came from a clash between Arturo Vidal and Rodrigo De Paul. During the first half, the Chilean midfielder taunted the Argentine with provocative gestures and later committed a harsh foul that earned him a yellow card, which will keep him out of the next match against Bolivia.
The most intense scene occurred at halftime. After exchanging words, Vidal shoved De Paul, who responded with mocking gestures, suggesting the Chilean would be watching the next World Cup from home. Coach Ricardo Gareca quickly defused the situation by substituting Vidal for the second half.
Despite some attacking changes, Chile was unable to equalize. The introduction of young Lucas Cepeda brought some energy to their offense, but his efforts were denied by a confident Dibu Martínez. Meanwhile, Argentina gave a debut to 17-year-old Franco Mastantuono, a rising talent from River Plate.
In the upcoming fixture, Chile will travel to face Bolivia in high-altitude El Alto, while Argentina will host Colombia in Buenos Aires. While the race for qualification tightens, the Albiceleste continues its steady march toward North America.
