Morocco Edge Tanzania to Secure Quarter-Final Berth in AFCON 2025
Brahim Díaz the Difference-Maker as Atlas Lions Break Taifa Stars' Resistance
Tournament hosts Morocco continued their march toward a long-awaited continental title with a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Tanzania in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 Round of 16. In a match defined by defensive discipline and tactical patience, the "Atlas Lions" relied on a moment of individual brilliance to overcome a resilient Tanzanian side that was making its first appearance in the knockout stages in 45 years.

A Battle of Persistence and Resilience
From the opening whistle at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, Morocco dominated the tempo. Walid Regragui’s men controlled over 70% of possession in the first half, searching for openings against a compact Tanzanian block. However, the "Taifa Stars" proved to be a stubborn opponent. Led by captain Mbwana Samatta, Tanzania focused on a disciplined defensive structure that frustrated the hosts, leaving the game scoreless at the interval despite the thunderous support from the home crowd.
Brahim Díaz Delivers the Decisive Blow
The deadlock was finally broken in the 64th minute. After a period of sustained pressure, Achraf Hakimi provided a characteristic burst of energy down the flank before finding Brahim Díaz in the box. The Real Madrid star, who has been in sensational form throughout the tournament, fired a stinging shot from a tight angle that beat goalkeeper Kwesi Masalanga. It was Díaz’s fourth goal of the competition, further cementing his status as one of Africa's premier talents.
Tanzania attempted a late surge to find an equalizer, but the Moroccan defense, anchored by Nayef Aguerd, remained impenetrable. With this victory, Morocco successfully avoids the "Round of 16 curse" that saw them exit early in previous editions. They now move into the quarter-finals with growing confidence, while Tanzania leaves the tournament with their heads held high after a historic run.
