Senegal still seeking control of Group D
In an ideal scenario, Senegal would be following the path of AFCON 2025 contenders like Egypt, Nigeria, and Algeria—entering the final group match at the top of the standings with the luxury of resting key players. That, however, has not been the case for the Lions of Teranga.
Instead, Senegal arrives at Tuesday’s Group D decider against Benin knowing there is still work to be done. The match will be played live on beIN SPORTS, with Senegal sitting on four points—likely enough to secure a spot in the Round of 16. Even so, the reigning African champions are targeting all three points to guarantee a more favorable draw in the knockout phase.
Group permutations keep pressure high
The situation in Group D remains wide open. Senegal and DR Congo both have four points, while Benin sits close behind with three. With both final group matches being played simultaneously, every goal could shift the standings and reshape the knockout bracket.
That uncertainty adds extra intensity to Senegal’s task, as even a draw could leave their final position dependent on results elsewhere. For a team built to compete deep into the tournament, securing first place would provide a significant strategic advantage.
Benin riding confidence into a historic clash
Benin enters the match buoyed by confidence after recording its first-ever victory at the AFCON finals, defeating Botswana in a hard-fought contest. The historic win has lifted morale, although striker Steve Mounié admitted it came at a physical cost.
“It was a very intense match, and we took quite a few hits. We are trying to recover as much as possible,” Mounié said, highlighting the toll of the tournament schedule.
With this being Benin’s third match in seven days, fatigue could play a role. Still, the team knows that even a draw could be enough to advance, making them a dangerous opponent with everything to gain.
Senegal depth could be decisive
While Benin may feel the strain of the schedule, Senegal’s deep and experienced squad is well equipped to handle the demands of a fast-paced AFCON tournament. Their balance, physicality, and tournament know-how should give them confidence as they look to seal qualification and top the group.
