Angola faces must-win clash vs Egypt at AFCON 2025

Angola enter a do-or-die showdown against Egypt on matchday three of Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025, knowing only a win could keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive.

The match will be played at the Grand Stade d’Agadir, with Egypt already qualified as Group B winners after back-to-back victories. Angola’s fate will depend not only on their result, but also on the outcome of South Africa’s match.

Historically, the odds favor Egypt. The Pharaohs are unbeaten in eight all-time meetings against Angola, including two AFCON victories in 1996 and 2008. Their most recent clashes came in World Cup qualifying, where Egypt won once and drew once.

Angola arrive under pressure after losing to South Africa and drawing with Zimbabwe. Despite their struggles in group stages at AFCON, the Palancas Negras still have hope, led by Gelson Dala, who has now scored five goals across the last two AFCON editions.

Egypt, meanwhile, are riding momentum and confidence. They are unbeaten in their last 12 AFCON matches and have already secured progression for the 20th time in tournament history. Much of that success has been driven by Mohamed Salah, who has scored in both group matches and now has nine AFCON goals, cementing his legacy as one of Egypt’s all-time greats.

While Egypt can afford rotation, Angola have everything on the line. A win would send them to the round of 16 for just the fourth time in history — making this one of the most decisive matches of AFCON 2025 so far.
