“Rory Can Win The Masters”: Nicklaus
Legendary Jack Nicklaus, the winningest player in the history of golf’s most prestigious tournament, attended the opening of the Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club and was asked about his favorite to win the Green Jacket this year.
The “Golden Bear,” a six-time champion at Augusta and widely regarded as the greatest golfer of all time, did not hesitate in his prediction: he sees Rory McIlroy as the main contender to repeat as champion.
Nicklaus’ Prediction
“Rory has taken the pressure off, and I think he has a great chance to win again this year,” said Jack Nicklaus. It is worth remembering that the Northern Irishman won last year the only major that had eluded him, after 17 years of attempts, completing the career Grand Slam with victories at the U.S. Open, The Open Championship, the PGA Championship, and finally the Masters Tournament.
Only six golfers in history have achieved this feat, including Jack Nicklaus himself, which further strengthens Rory McIlroy’s status as one of the top favorites. His 2025 victory was especially emotional, as he needed a playoff to secure his first Green Jacket.

Rivals and the Augusta Outlook
Jack Nicklaus’ words make sense: without the pressure of completing the Grand Slam, Rory McIlroy can play with more freedom and focus on defending his title. However, the challenge is significant. There has not been a back-to-back Masters Tournament champion since Tiger Woods accomplished it in 2001 and 2002.
Rory McIlroy started this edition strongly, posting a -5 under-par round, an ideal opening in his title defense. Even so, he will have to compete at the highest level against rivals such as Scottie Scheffler and Spain’s Jon Rahm, both arriving in excellent form.
It remains to be seen whether time will prove Jack Nicklaus right. A new champion will be crowned on Sunday, but everything points to a thrilling weekend ahead at Augusta.
