Possibility of Second Fight Between Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez and Terence Crawford Ruled Out
Canelo Álvarez's historic defeat to Terence Crawford will not be followed by an immediate rematch: Eddie Hearn confirmed that there is no rematch clause in the contract. The Mexican's future in the 168-pound weight class could take a different turn.
The end of the Canelo era in super middleweight boxing
The September 13 fight at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas left an indelible mark on boxing history. Terence “Bud” Crawford dominated Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez from start to finish, taking all four of his 168-pound belts and becoming the first boxer to unify three different divisions in the era of the four organizations. The scorecards reflected the American's absolute control, who nullified the Mexican's game plan.
Hearn confirms: there is no rematch clause
The big question after the fight was whether there would be a second fight to redeem the Guadalajara native's defeat. However, in an interview with Ring Magazine, Eddie Hearn, Canelo's former promoter and one of the most influential voices in the industry, poured cold water on the speculation: “I don't think there's a rematch clause, and I don't see Canelo looking for more of this,” he said.
The absence of this clause represents a shift in strategy for Álvarez, who in the past has secured his right to a second fight in high-profile contracts. This time, however, the stage is set for Canelo to explore other options.
The super middleweight division puzzle
For the Mexican, this defeat represents his first loss in the 168-pound division and opens up a range of possibilities. With no contractual obligation to fight Crawford again, Canelo could prioritize other rivals within the division, such as David Benavidez, or even seek new challenges in the light heavyweight division.
For his part, Crawford has decided to stay at 168 pounds to pursue another historic milestone, fueling speculation about his next steps in 2026.

Canelo's future in Riyadh Season
Another key factor is Álvarez's contract with Riyadh Season, which still requires him to fight two high-profile bouts. This could speed up the announcement of his next opponent and redefine the global boxing calendar. Meanwhile, fans remain divided: some are calling for an immediate rematch, while others believe it is time for Canelo to turn the page and seek new motivations.
