Rockets Lock In Jabari Smith Jr. with Five-Year, $122 Million Extension
The Houston Rockets have secured a key piece of their future, reaching a five-year, $122 million fully guaranteed contract extension with forward Jabari Smith Jr.
The deal, which contains no player or team options, will keep Smith in Houston through the 2030-31 season and begins after his rookie contract expires next year.
Core Piece of Houston’s Rise
Smith, the third overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, has steadily developed into a cornerstone for the Rockets as they’ve transitioned from rebuilding to contending in the Western Conference. At just 22, he averaged 12.2 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 1.1 assists last season, despite missing significant time with a broken hand.
Smith returned to the lineup late in the season and played a pivotal role in Houston’s run to the No. 2 seed and their first playoff appearance in five years.
While Smith’s three-point shooting has been inconsistent, he showed promise in the postseason, hitting 45.5% from deep. He is the only player from his draft class to have already surpassed 2,500 points and 1,500 rebounds, underlining his versatility and value.
Rockets’ Offseason of Commitment
Smith’s extension is the latest move in a busy offseason for Houston, who have also retained veterans Fred VanVleet, Jae’Sean Tate, Aaron Holiday, and Jeff Green, and extended both center Steven Adams and head coach Ime Udoka.
The Rockets made headlines earlier this month by acquiring Kevin Durant from the Phoenix Suns, and notably refused to include Smith in any trade discussions, signaling their long-term faith in his development and importance to the franchise.
General manager Rafael Stone has emphasized building around a young, dynamic core, with Smith, Alperen Sengun, and Amen Thompson all seen as foundational pieces. With most roster decisions settled and the team still under the luxury tax threshold, Houston is now expected to pursue further depth in free agency.
