Luton scores a lucky win in League One opener
Luton Town beat AFC Wimbledon 1-0 to kick off the new EFL League One season with a win at Kenilworth Road.
There was a massive element of luck for the goal, though, as a hopeful ball forward was sent looping into his own net by Wimbledon defender Ryan Johnson with just five minutes left to play.
Until that point, chances had been few and far between, but the Hatters arguably had the better of them.
The first serious threat on goal took more than an hour to materialise as Reuell Walters fired from long range after a corner had been cleared to him on the edge of the Wimbledon penalty area, but visiting goalkeeper Nathan Bishop was equal to it, diving to his left to keep it out.
Lamine Fanne had a shot well block from inside the area on 79 minutes before Johnson's misfortune put the hosts ahead. Shandon Baptiste then fired millimetres wide in an attempt to seal it a minute later, but his miss mattered not as Luton easily held out for the win.
