Anton says Dortmund will be back next season
Borussia Dortmund defender Waldemar Anton insisted "we'll be back at it next season" after finishing second in the Bundesliga.
Dortmund won 2-0 on the final day of the season, with Serhou Guirassy and Yan Couto scoring against Werder Bremen at Weserstadion.
Julian Ryerson assisted Guirassy's opener; Ryerson provided 13 assists via crosses in this Bundesliga season, which is tied with Inter's Federico Dimarco for the highest tally among all players in Europe's top five leagues.
The full-back has provided 15 assists in the Bundesliga in total this season, the second-most by a Dortmund player in a single campaign after Jadon Sancho (16) in 2019-2020.
Niko Kovac's side conceded just 34 goals this season in the league, the lowest of any team.
It is the fourth time Dortmund has finished a league campaign with the best defensive record, having previously done so in 2010-11 (22), 1994-95 (33) – both of which ended in them winning the title – and 1965-66 (36).
Nevertheless, it still finished 16 points behind champion Bayern Munich, while it was knocked out in the play-off round of the Champions League and the last 16 of the DFB-Pokal.
Anton admitted Dortmund did not achieve its primary targets this season, but still has a campaign to be proud of.
"We've had a very, very good season," Anton said. "We were in the mix for long stretches and achieved the goal that was still possible: finishing second. That's the main thing.
"Nevertheless, we had completely different goals, but we didn't manage to finish first. But Bayern have had an outstanding season; we mustn't forget that. Congratulations to Bayern.
"We'll be back at it next season."
Ryerson added: "In terms of points, it was a good season for us in the Bundesliga. 73 points is a decent tally.
"Unfortunately, the gap is a bit too big, but we can build on that. We've got ten days off now, so we can recover a bit – and it's also very important for our mental state.
"And then I'll be looking forward to the World Cup even more."
