Strasbourg appoint Oliveira as boss after surprise O'Neil departure
Strasbourg named Portuguese Hugo Oliveira as their new coach on Sunday after Gary O'Neil's sudden departure last month.
Englishman O'Neil left the Ligue 1 side for Ipswich on June 26 having only arrived in France in January.
Strasbourg did not state the length of Oliveira's contract as the 47-year-old arrives from Portuguese top-flight outfit Famalicao, which was his first job as head coach.
"It's an honour to be here in Strasbourg and to join such a great project," he said in a club statement.
"I want to bring emotion, create memories and give the best of myself to help the club to develop," he added.
Oliveira has spent the majority of his coaching career as a goalkeeping specialist working with the likes of Portugal, Everton and Fulham, alongside Marco Silva at the English sides.
In December 2024, he took over Famalicao and they ended up in fifth place in the Primeira Liga last season, their best finish since returning to the top-flight six years ago.
O'Neil had guided the side from the Alsace to the Conference League semi-finals and eighth spot in the table.
Strasbourg open their new Ligue 1 campaign at Marseille on the weekend of August 21-23.
