Wissa sends Congo DR into World Cup last 32 to face England
Yoane Wissa scored twice as Congo DR defeated Uzbekistan 3-1 to secure a historic place in the World Cup knockout rounds for the first time.
The victory set up a Round of 32 meeting with England and also delivered Congo DR's first-ever World Cup win.
Uzbekistan made the brighter start in Atlanta and thought they had taken the lead inside the opening minute when Eldor Shomurodov found the net, only for the flag to rule the effort out for offside.
The captain did not have to wait long for his reward.
Ten minutes later, Shomurodov produced a superb lob from a narrow angle to give Fabio Cannavaro's side the lead.
Congo DR believed they had equalised through Nathanael Mbuku after the winger rifled into the top corner, but VAR ruled the goal out after he was adjudged to have fouled Sherzod Nasrullaev in the build-up.
Sebastien Desabre's side continued to press, although Wissa missed a glorious opportunity early in the second half before Shomurodov almost produced another spectacular finish, this time seeing his effort land on the roof of the net.
The turning point arrived midway through the second half.
Abdukodir Khusanov brought down Wissa inside the area, allowing the Newcastle United forward to pick himself up and calmly convert the resulting penalty.
The equaliser sparked Congo DR into life.
Just two minutes later, Meschack Elia's deflected effort fell kindly for Fiston Mayele, who reacted quickest to flick the ball beyond Abduvohid Nematov and complete the turnaround.
Wissa wrapped up a famous victory deep into stoppage time, curling a fine finish into the far corner to seal his side's place in the knockout rounds.
For Uzbekistan, the defeat brought an end to a memorable first World Cup campaign despite an encouraging display.
Congo DR's qualification also continued an impressive tournament for Africa's representatives, with only Tunisia eliminated so far and Algeria still hoping to join the nations through to the Round of 32.
