Switzerland beat Algeria to book World Cup last-16 place
Switzerland secured their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 with a composed 2-0 victory over Algeria in Vancouver.
The Swiss were in control for much of the contest and will now face either Colombia or Ghana for a place in the quarter-finals.
Johan Manzambi proved the catalyst for the opening goal, bursting down the left flank before delivering a low cross that Breel Embolo converted from close range to hand Switzerland a deserved first-half lead.
Algeria searched for a way back after the interval, but Switzerland remained compact at the back and continued to threaten on the counter.
Dan Ndoye wrapped up the victory late on, drilling a low effort through a crowded penalty area that slipped beyond goalkeeper Luca Zidane despite the Algerian keeper getting a hand to the ball.
The defeat brings Algeria's World Cup campaign to an end after a spirited run to the knockout rounds, while Switzerland march on to the last 16 with another assured display.
Murat Yakin's side will now turn their attention to a meeting with either Colombia or Ghana as they bid to continue their progress in North America.
