Roberto Martinez steps down as Portugal coach
Roberto Martinez has confirmed he is stepping down as Portugal head coach following his side's FIFA World Cup Round of 16 exit to Spain.
Portugal's campaign came to an end after a 1-0 defeat in Arlington, where Mikel Merino's stoppage-time winner sent the European champions into the quarter-finals.
Speaking after the match, Martinez confirmed it was his final game in charge of the national team.
"It is true that it was my last game with the Portugal national team," he said.
"Thank you to the Portuguese people because it was an incredible period, a pride which I can't describe."
"All that strength and energy we had from all the fans, from all the Portuguese people, was incredible."
"Thank you for this and I take with me memories for life."
The 52-year-old Spaniard took charge of Portugal in 2023 after previously managing Belgium, Swansea City, Wigan Athletic and Everton.
Martinez leaves his role following the expiry of his contract, bringing an end to a three-year spell in charge of the Selecao.
