Paraguay save World Cup hopes with win over eliminated Türkiye
Ten-man Paraguay beat Türkiye 1-0 at the World Cup, a result that kept their hopes alive and also guaranteed co-hosts the United States top spot in Group D.
Türkiye's defeat means they become the second team after Haiti to be eliminated from the tournament.
Matias Galarza scored the only goal in a game that also featured the first dismissal under FIFA's new rule prohibiting players from covering their mouths during on-field confrontations, with Miguel Almiron shown a red card.
Galarza's low long-range strike beat Türkiye goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir after just 63 seconds.
Former Newcastle United forward Almiron was sent off in first-half stoppage time after covering his mouth while appearing to direct a comment at Türkiye defender Mert Muldur.
In a scrappy contest, Deniz Gul had a golden opportunity to equalise in the 88th minute when Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill could only parry a shot, but the forward stabbed his effort wide.
Merih Demiral glanced a header wide in the closing moments and was left devastated at full-time as Türkiye's players slumped to the turf following their elimination.
