Neymar signals Brazil retirement after World Cup exit
Neymar appeared to bring the curtain down on his international career after Brazil's FIFA World Cup campaign ended with a 2-1 defeat to Norway in the Round of 16.
The Brazil forward came off the bench and converted a stoppage-time penalty, but it proved only a consolation as Erling Haaland's late brace sent Norway into the quarter-finals.
Speaking after the match, the 34-year-old suggested his time with the Selecao had come to an end.
"I tried and I tried. Now it's over. It began here and it ends here," Neymar said.
Neymar was visibly emotional after the final whistle and was consoled by teammates as Brazil's hopes of a sixth World Cup title came to an end.
Brazil's all-time leading scorer returned to the national team for the tournament after a lengthy injury absence and made his first international appearance since October 2023 during the group-stage victory over Scotland.
The former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain forward, now back at Santos, made two appearances at the World Cup, with his penalty against Norway likely to be the final goal of a remarkable international career should his retirement be confirmed.
Neymar leaves the international stage as one of the greatest players in Brazil's history, having surpassed Pele as the nation's all-time leading goalscorer and played a central role for the Selecao across more than a decade.
