Historic DR Congo hold Portugal to World Cup draw
Cristiano Ronaldo's record-equalling sixth World Cup appearance began in frustrating fashion as Portugal were held to a 1-1 draw by the Democratic Republic of Congo in their Group K opener on Wednesday.
The African side, playing at the World Cup for the first time since 1974 when the nation competed as Zaire, claimed a historic first point at the tournament thanks to Yoane Wissa's first-half equaliser.
Portugal made an ideal start in Houston when Joao Neves powered home a header from Pedro Neto's cross in the sixth minute.
Despite dominating possession, Roberto Martinez's side failed to extend their lead and were punished deep into first-half stoppage time.
Wissa rose unmarked to head beyond Diogo Costa, scoring DR Congo's first-ever World Cup goal and sparking jubilant celebrations among the players and supporters.
Portugal thought they had restored their advantage in the second half when Joao Cancelo found the net with an overhead kick, but the effort was ruled out for offside.
DR Congo continued to threaten and nearly went ahead when veteran striker Cedric Bakambu held off Bruno Fernandes before striking the post.
Ronaldo, who matched Lionel Messi's record of six World Cup appearances, struggled to impose himself on the contest.
The 41-year-old was presented with two clear opportunities by Francisco Conceicao late in the match but sent both efforts wide of the target.
Portugal pushed for a winner in the closing stages but were unable to find a breakthrough, leaving Martinez's side with a point from their opening fixture while DR Congo celebrated a landmark result in their World Cup return.
