Egypt target first World Cup win against New Zealand
Egypt will look to build on a promising opening performance when they face New Zealand in Vancouver on Sunday.
The Pharaohs began their Group G campaign with a 1-1 draw against Belgium, a result that left mixed emotions after Hossam Hassan's side came within touching distance of a notable victory.
Emam Ashour's superb first-half strike gave Egypt the lead and there were periods when they looked the more dangerous side, only for Mohamed Hany's own goal to bring Belgium level and ensure the points were shared.
While there was disappointment at not holding on for the win, the performance offered plenty of encouragement ahead of the remaining group matches.
That race remains tightly contested after all four teams in Group G collected a point from their opening matches.
New Zealand also produced a promising display in their 2-2 draw with Iran.
The All Whites twice led through Elijah Just, who scored both goals, while Chris Wood provided the assists. Although they were unable to secure victory, Darren Bazeley's side showed they have the quality to trouble any team in the group.
With Belgium and Iran meeting earlier on Sunday, both teams will head into the match knowing a win could provide a valuable advantage heading into the final round of fixtures.
Egypt will once again look to Salah for inspiration after the captain created Ashour's goal in the draw with Belgium, while Marmoush will hope to have a greater influence against New Zealand.
The meeting will be the first between the two nations, with both sides targeting a first win of the tournament.
New Zealand predicted lineup:
Crocombe; Payne, Surman, Boxall, Cacace; Bell, Stamenic; McCowatt, Singh, Just; Wood
Egypt predicted lineup:
Shobeir; Hany, Ibrahim, Fathy, Fatouh; Attia, Lasheen; Salah, Ashour, Ziko; Marmoush
