Egypt eye historic World Cup last-16 berth against Australia
Egypt will aim to continue their World Cup run when they face Australia in Arlington on Friday, with a place in the Round of 16 up for grabs.
The Pharaohs have already made history by progressing beyond the group stage for the first time since 1934 after finishing second in Group G behind Belgium on goal difference.
Hossam Hassan's side opened with a hard-earned draw against Belgium before defeating New Zealand to claim the first World Cup victory in Egypt's history. A 1-1 draw with Iran then sealed their place in the knockout rounds.
The biggest decision facing Hassan concerns Mohamed Salah.
The Egypt captain returned to training after suffering a hamstring injury against Iran, but the head coach admitted he will not risk his leading scorer unless he is fully fit.
"I am not going to run any risk unless I am 100 percent sure he is fit," Hassan said on the eve of the match.
Hassan also dismissed suggestions that Egypt's hopes rest solely on Salah.
"It is more than one player, it is a collective, and we aim to showcase this tomorrow."
Australia arrive after finishing runners-up in Group D, having beaten Türkiye, lost to the United States and secured the point they needed against Paraguay to progress.
Tony Popovic's side have built their campaign around a well-drilled back line led by Harry Souttar, while Jackson Irvine has provided the experience in midfield and Nestory Irankunda has offered their greatest attacking threat.
The Socceroos will again be without Jacob Italiano and Mathew Leckie through injury. Egypt are certain to miss suspended midfielder Mohanad Lasheen, while Hamdy Fathy, Hossam Abdelmaguid, Mohamed Abdelmonem and Ahmed El Fotouh will all face late fitness tests.
History beckons for both sides, with Egypt and Australia each bidding to secure their first World Cup knockout victory and a place in the last 16. The winners will take on either Argentina or Cape Verde for a place in the quarter-finals.
Egypt predicted lineup:
Shobeir; Hany, Ibrahim, Rabia, Hafez; Ateya, Saber; Ziko, Salah, Ashour; Marmoush
Australia predicted lineup:
Beach; Circati, Souttar, Herrington; Bos, O'Neill, Irvine, Behich; Volpato, Irankunda, Metcalfe
