Chivu takes blame for Sommer mistake in Inter's big win over Pisa
Inter extended their lead at the Serie A summit with a 6-2 win over Pisa on Friday, but they had to come back from two goals down at home.
Cristian Chivu took responsibility for Yann Sommer's mistake in Inter’s 6-2 win over Pisa and praised his side for their mentality in the turnaround win.
Pisa went 2-0 up in 23 minutes when Sommer first passed the ball straight to Stefano Moreo, who curled in from distance, before beating the Swiss goalkeeper with a header at the near post.
However, Inter came back in stunning fashion. They scored three goals in an eight-minute period before half-time and then found the back of the net another three times in the last 12 minutes at the San Siro.
Inter scored at least six goals in a home match across all competitions for the first time since November 2022, a 6-1 win over Bologna in Serie A, while they won a league match after trailing by two goals for the first time since March 2025 (3-2 versus Monza).
Chivu was delighted to see his side fight back after a poor start to extend their lead over AC Milan to six points at the Serie A summit.
"A match lasts 100 minutes, and it can be turned around," Chivu told DAZN.
"That was my fault [Sommer's mistake] because I'm the one who makes certain requests to the goalkeeper. Sometimes I put Yann in difficulty.
"The attitude is what matters; you might suffer at times, but what counts is how you react. I'd say we did very well.
"We could have collapsed, but instead, the team kept doing their things. The only regret is that we didn't make it 4-2 earlier, only at the end.
"But hats off to the boys, they give everything they have to make this a competitive season and to show that we’re working to reach our objectives."
It was another impressive night for Francesco Esposito, who scored Inter's third just before the break with a brilliant header.
Esposito has been involved in at least one goal in his last three matches in the league, doing so for the first time since November 2024 in Serie B with Spezia.
"He really wants to prove himself and put himself on the line. He takes responsibility, like all 25 of our players," Chivu added on the striker.
"And if things don't go well, it will always be my fault because sometimes I push too hard. I'm happy they believe in our work."
