Lyon downs Monaco to hand PSG the Ligue 1 title
Second-placed Monaco had its faint Ligue 1 title dreams fully extinguished as it lost 3-2 at Lyon, a defeat that guaranteed a third straight title for Paris Saint-Germain and kept Lyon's hopes of qualifying for Europe alive with three games of the season remaining.
PSG missed the chance to seal the title at home when it had to battle back for a point in a 3-3 draw with lowly Le Havre, but it proved enough to seal the title this matchday as Monaco failed to capitalise on a blistering start at Groupama Stadium.
Wissam Ben Yedder had the ball in the back of Lyon's net less than 30 seconds after the first kick-off as Monaco rushed forward and caught its host cold, a VAR check confirming there was no offside.
Lyon was in front after 26 minutes thanks to two goals in four minutes, the first for Alexandre Lacazette and the second for Said Benrahma, who swept home a powerful strike from 12 yards after a crisp passing move.
But Ben Yedder grabbed a second on the hour to equalise, rising to glance home a superb header and give his side hope that it could perhaps prolong PSG's title party a little longer.
With Monaco pushing for a winner, Lyon spied an opportunity on the counter-attack, and Lacazette found Malick Fofana with a throughball from the Lyon half that set the 19-year-old free and he calmly slotted home the winner with only six minutes remaining to seal the three points for Lyon, and a 12th title for PSG, which has now finished top of the pile in 10 of its past 11 campaigns.
Aside from the COVID-impacted 2019-2020 season, five of their last six league titles have been secured before the start of May. It also means coach Luis Enrique remains in the running for a treble in his first season at the club, with PSG taking on Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals next week.
